Vision & Values
Vision:
Our free running club in Provo, Utah is for all ages and abilities and helps people stay motivated to exercise regularly, make friends, learn from expert coaches how to improve as a runner and prevent and treat injuries, run in safer places and fun routes that help avoid injury and burnout, supply water stations and healthy refreshments for necessary hydration, fueling and recovery, provide prizes and free shoe credit to make practice more fun, rewarding and affordable, provide free massages to help prevent injury, and teach values to create well-balanced individuals who create a better community.
Values:
We encourage values in our club because we believe that people are not just single-dimensional, and that running fast should not be the only important goal for anyone. Here are some values we encourage:
Sportsmanship: We teach that it's important to congratulate or console our competition after races and hard workouts, no matter who wins or beats who, with a handshake, a smile, an encouraging comment, or something similar. We encourage not cutting off other runners or impeding them in order to get an advantage. If we trip, we get back up and try our best to catch up, rather than throwing a fit.
Kindness: Everyone is an equal regardless of their running abilities or anything else. We encourage our team to smile at each person who comes to practice or we make eye contact with. Unless we are in the middle of a hard workout or a race, we smile at every person who crosses our path and greet everyone who greets us and try to greet others who are close to us. We cheer for others in workouts and races, try to help those around us succeed, and only speak kindly about others at practice and races and try to look for the good in others. We are all a big running family. Show interest in others. Go out of your way to be a friend to those who are shy or do not feel included.
Gratitude: We encourage everyone to thank those who help us, give us support, and who cheer for us.
Positivity: Scatter sunshine everywhere you go. Running club is a place where many can take a break from many things in our lives that may cause worrying or stress. We try to keep conversations about cheerful topics and stay positive. Positivity is a key element that elite athletes use to stay motivated and to keep persevering.
Nutrition: We provide refreshments at practice to make sure no one is hungry at practice.
Modesty: When we are modestly dressed, we can exercise a good influence on others. We don't use our bodies to get attention and approval. We reward club members with credit towards running shoes when they wear our modest team tank tops or t-shirts to practice, which cover the abdominal area. Our female coaches are good role-models of modesty and keep their abdominal areas covered as well.
Honesty: We strive to be honest in our efforts to be the best runners we can. Performance-enhancing drugs and doping are immoral and destroy sports. We never cut the course short or cheat to win. Following the rules of the game is very important. Everyone should have a fair chance to win. When you do your best and are honest, you are a winner.
